With less than a month to go until the school bells hopefully ring out again across the UK, it’s time to start dusting off your child’s school uniform and checking their shoes fit.
“Will they or won’t they return to school?” is a hot topic of conversation at the moment but the signs are positive and after more than five months at home, I am sure I am not alone in wanting education in the classroom to resume again, in whatever guise that might take.
Returning To School
It’s a key year for my youngest as she returns for her A’levels and what will be her final secondary school year.
The chat around our dinner table at the moment frequently turns to what she has missed most about being at school, as well as what she is most looking forward to when she returns
After countless weeks of online distance learning, seeing her teachers face-to-face and being in a classroom environment with the opportunity to share and discuss ideas is top of her list.
Second is a return to routine. Despite the joys in the early days of lockdown, of not having to get up, catch the bus and arrive in time for registration, the novelty soon wore off and those simple pleasures of “going to school” were sorely missed.
Finally and perhaps not surprisingly it’s all the social benefits; seeing her friends and hanging out in the common room between lessons as well as attending her extra-curricular clubs.
Yet it is easy as a parent sometimes to forget the bigger picture and overlook the secondary benefits of being at school and the value it adds from a social and emotional perspective. For some it’s a welcome respite, a home from home, a place of security and stability as well as learning.
After all this time our tweens and teens have grown for sure but with the return to school debate still raging it’s easy perhaps to be complacent about getting organised for school.
Don’t be. A smaller uniform you can maybe get away with for a while at the beginning of term, but I have found out to my own detriment in the past that smaller shoes just don’t cut it.
So I am here to help with a giveaway with Treads who are offering one lucky person the chance to win a free pair of shoes and make sure their child returns to school fully prepared for the year ahead.
